elmat:

Insightful series of posts. My own direct experience with terrorism is in South Armagh, N. Ireland in the early 1980s. While some claim credit for (mostly) ending the conflict in N. Ireland by the political process, in my opinion the real reason for the cessation of hostilities is the Irish economic miracle. When young men have the opportunity to find a well-paid job and to earn enough money to buy a car, beers in the pub and to get a girlfriend, bombing and generally causing mayhem look a lot less attractive. I have read several times that the mullahs in Palestine and elsewhere whip their teenage suicide bombers into a suicidal frenzy with tall tales of the forty (seventy?) virgins that await them in paradise. The poor kids are being conned into killing themselves through the manipulation of their reproductive urges.
