you are right that many of the war critics have proven just as wrong as the administration, because many of the disaster scenarios that they forecast for the war itself did not prove true. but...

tb,
War is ugly. It is always ugly.

This one had lots of critics going in and lots now. Why is that a surprise?

WWII had lots of American critics. Every war we have ever been in was roundly criticized before and after the fact.

Every war we have been in had GIs who were punished for misdeeds and opponents who likewise received punishments.

To complain about this and whine about that sounds too Kerry like. The fact is those who opposed the war were equally wrong about as many and as many important issues as you think the hawks were. Of course now they have conveniently discarded those old positions and only write opinions about "mistakes", whatever they are.

The war did not go according to plan. It did not go according to the hawk plan and it did not go as prophesied by the left. The press writes volumes about about the first and precious little about the second.

War never goes according to plan. That is part of its ugliness. Why is the fact that one didn't, such a revelation? Why is the fact that this war is ugly suddenly so revealing? And why have we gotten so far away from the true brutality of what happens in war?

Americans were mesmerized by the reports from embedded reporters. Many were frozen to the TV screen for weeks. Yet they saw precious little of the ugly...Some of the most memorable pictures were of GIs sleeping in a sandstorm and another of guys resting in foxholes in pouring rain. The really ugly pictures of combat smashed bodies and mass graves were either not shown or shown once or twice and glossed over. We heard none of the screams of the dying and wounded. We saw no photos of soldiers falling dead. It seems blood was off limits to photographers.

But jazz it up with a little nudity and illicit sex and suddenly everyone is attentive, critical and finding a bit of ugliness. The photos have been on TV everyday for over a week with no letup in sight. Two major world leaders feel pressure. This unseemly incident may be with us for a long time, but it won't be because it is different from past wars.

Every war is loaded with unseemliness and worse everyday because war is truly ugly. Now that we have all agreed on a bit of ugliness, and the press can get everyone's attention with nude photos, they want to point out that the right made planning errors and (ignoring similar left errors) point out that the left is right in pointing them out.

Perspective has been lost. We need to get it back. If ugliness captures the world's attention, let's give them some. Let's demand equal time be given to detailed photos of the dead bodies and body parts of those slaughtered by terrorists while this has been brewing. Let's post the photos we found of Saddam inspired sex abuse and torture of humans. Let's detail a photographer to provide daily photos of the murdered bodies of humans still being uncovered in mass graves everyday.
