It's not just a result of photographing the abuse- it's a result of the abuse. Let's lay the primary blame where it is due. Unless we killed all those prisoners, they would get out and talk about their experiences to other Iraqis. At least this way, with the documentation, we can better understand them, and we know what happened to them. Imagine what liars they would have been called by some on our side, had there been no documentation (and I think you can imagine just who some of those some might have been). Plenty of people would have been very ready to believe that such stories were fabrications- but the Iraqis (and quite a few Iraqis, and their extended families) would have known they were true. It's probably better this way, to lance the nasty boil, and get the poison out, and let it air. It might help to staunch the necrosis of the wound.
