I didn't see him discuss any other country being violent, did you?

The bottom line is that we're human beings.. and Americans don't have a monopoly on social violence, even as "good citizens"..

Every society has such potential.. So to simply point out that the the US is a "violent country" implies that other countries are not..

Let's just get a grip and accept that "good people, in certain circumstances, do very bad things to win affirmation from their peers and friends".

The point is that we often promote ourselves as more developed and civilized than the rest of the world, and that just isn't the case.

And that's why millions of people are dying (sometimes physically) to emigrate to this country?

We are more civilized because we have system of law and human rights by which the inhumanity of people can be tried and judged.

Just because we're American doesn't mean we're superhuman. It means we hold to a system of values by which our darker nature is repressed and moderated.. And when it rears its ugly face against other Americans (and others), it is confronted and punished.

The main difference between what happened in the Iraqi prison and the rest of the non-democratic world is that the perpetrators are being made to answer for their crimes.

So yes.. I would say that makes our civilization more developed.
