Yes, that is a well known measure of the value of gold. The only problem is that might have been more valid when suits were made by hand, and represented a certain amount of labor.

Like Walter Huston in Treasure of the Sierra Madre, its not the gold itself that is so valuable, its the value of the labor of the man who found, and the value of the labor of the other 25 guys who did not.

A "good" suit can be had for maybe $350-550, but its a matter of taste.
