From what I understand, they were originally posted on line by the AP but were pulled about an hour later for some strange reason.

Perhaps that "strange" reason was consideration for the families and friends of the victims. When the victims are Americans and their names are known, showing pictures of the carnage is different from showing pictures of anonymous Iraqi victims. I imagine that that consideration will always trump any other considerations such as the one you raise.
