It is the extreme rightwing Christians behind the branding, and they have taken a page out of the Nazi playbook to do so. Ironically, few rightwingers are really religious yet they use (or abuse) God, Jesus and faith to shame opponents, just as chickenhawks (who never served in combat) use patriotism and militarism to shame "liberals". They have met their match in war hero John Kerry though.
