AT&T Saves Millions With VOIP
5/11/04 Wall Street J.

AT&T Corp. said it saved $250 million in payments to rival phone companies since 2000 by routing phone calls via the Internet part of the way, a method regulators barred in April. Two large phone companies have filed suit against AT&T over the matter, and others are likely to follow. In April, the Federal Communications Commission ruled against a petition filed by AT&T in October 2002, in which the Bedminster, N.J., company sought a ruling on whether long-distance phone calls routed in part over the Internet using so-called Internet protocol, or IP, were exempt from termination fees -- charges that phone companies pay each other to finish calls on each other's networks. AT&T said that as a result of the ruling, the company will begin paying fees to terminate long-distance IP phone calls. AT&T yesterday also said it saved $355 million in access fees and other charges as part of a prepaid calling service that is under review by the FCC.
