By using an internal northbridge, the AMD opteron or athelon-64 can run at chip speed right up to the DDR connections. A single dual core communicates at chip speed. Multi chip designs communicate at Ghz or greater bandwidth over hypertransport.

Yes, the Intel design is improved by dual core, but barely over the multi-chip solution. In return all the power and heat has to be packed into a single die.
