TP, Yes, the Intel design is improved by dual core, but barely over the multi-chip solution.

There is no basis to this assertion. One of the biggest reasons for migrating to multi-core CPUs is to reduce the traffic on external interfaces in a system, whether it be shared processor buses or HyperTransport. If Intel's bus represents a bigger drag on multiprocessor performance than HyperTransport, then Intel has more to gain by going dual-core.

In return all the power and heat has to be packed into a single die.

This will be true for both Intel and AMD, so it is irrelevant.
