Robert; Just threw that comment in to get responses. It is true though that the Apple system is more fool tolerant than a DOS system. It will not let you get into trouble most of the time, which accounts for its popularity with schools. The MIS managers were run ragged and had huge costs for DOS based stuff, all to save on the costs, but save they did, and after a while it settled in and the operators knew what parameters they could operate in. The first DOS shells, or DOS hells as they might be known came along pointing out the need on the Intels for a good GUI. The Dos Hells were attempts to keep the operator in a box with no way out but to run the program. Novell did the same to keep people out of trouble. Apple will not let you get into trouble(usually) And along came the Wins ending in Win95b, and it has a GUI, and you can get into trouble. How I would like to see "Mr Gates, you have done an illegal operation and will be terminated" on my screen, and not the usual message, and so I run automatic backup every 20 Ms so I never lose a letter. Rest on laurels, I want to stress that Apple should examine all aspect sof it.s current operation and remember there are no sacred cows, if they cling to a laurel(one bad aspect that was good in the far past but dead now) that will have a real time and future cost. Resting on laurels put them where they are now, burn the laurels, fight for your life is the current credo that they all should have. Please advise URL for "gistics" Bill |
