TP, The transistor budget for Intel may be better served by moving the logic of the northbridge onto the chip.

True, but that's a more drastic transition than dual-core. For one, the processor bus itself will need to change, which also means changes in the chipset and platform. Another is the fact that the processor architecture itself will need to change more for an integrated northbridge than for multiple cores.
