help ...

i've got something ugly buried deep
inside my machine that keeps eating
up my system resources - it happens
whenever i'm on the net or using my
email. i get notifications that
my resources are running dangerously
low and they are indeed even if i close
everything and am just using word.

i'm using windows 98. i took my computer
in to be fixed - the guy found 3 viruses
and removed them, but the problem remains.

i'm using the latest norton anti-virus, am
running zonealarm, ad-aware and have just
recently installed spy bot which incidentally
found all manner of crap which i subsequently
deleted (that was last night)

but, it's still happening.

i constantly have to reboot.

also after i close a program, the box on the
bottom of my screen still remains. its
blank, but it's still there. sometimes i'll
end up with 5 empty boxes, plus the one that
i'm using and then, bingo - no resources left.

i'm at my wits end and am thinking that the only
thing left to do is reinstall my operating
system and programs and data, etc, etc.

has anyone else experienced this?
any suggestions?
