I do enjoy it when I can find points of agreement with people on SI. Your latest post is one that I feel particularly happy to have received. We do have some points that we agree on.

It is a funny way of describing a serious problem. I agree with you that it is a quizzical attribute of the American public that it is so doggedly superstitious (aka religious).
Clearly, efforts by the elites to use religion as an "opiate for the masses" is a big part of why America is so religious. Such superstition is simply not permitted to get traction in more sophisticated cultures in the other OECD countries which are all substantially less inclined toward pseudo-intellectual mythologies.

Here's where you and I will part company. Before the war, I led anti-war street demonstrations here in my home town. Due to my notoriety, I was invited to appear on two separate public affairs forums on two separate television stations in town. I made it perfectly clear in late 2002 that the invasion of Iraq was to be perpetrated for three reasons.
1) Imperial Arrogance,
2) Israel, I.e., the U.S. military was to do the dirty work for the Israeli imperialists who lust after Greater Israel from the Nile to the Euphrates and
3) The Theft of the Iraqi Oil Prize.
I have seen nothing in the 14 months since we invaded Iraq to dissuade me from my view that these were the three goals of King George's Most Excellent Adventure.
