I'd really doubt those were very big chickens. When I was a kid, we raised 100 chicks each spring. We'd butcher the roosters by mid summer and they'd weigh well over 3 pounds, approaching 4. Today's chickens barely weigh 2-1/2 pounds.

I stopped into KFC several months ago and ordered two pieces of dark. What they brought me looked more like a pigeon than the chickens I remembered. You can still get large chickens at the butcher shop, but they call them "roasters".
