I think the idea of a spin-off is just not going to happen.. They have tried that and they won’t find a banker and investors who will support this approach again…

Moreover, having LuminentOIC as an integral part of MRV is a central element of their business plan.

What this Kevin Green hire tells me is that they see a coming upswing in the business and are staffing up to meet improving business conditions for LuminentOIC. I understand that other elements of MRV have also added professional staff in recent months..

Even more interesting about the hire is that he comes from a company making a competing product which is also coming to market this spring.

“ExceLight Communications, a U.S.-based unit of Sumitomo Electric Industries, announced that it will begin volume shipments of its XFP and X2 10Gb/s pluggable optical transceivers in spring 2004.”

MRV first announced its XFP in September 2002 luminentoic.com
and at the same time announced some type of partnership with Intel on this.

"Working with Intel enabled Luminent to be first to demonstrate an XFP MSA-compliant optical transceiver," said Near Margalit, vice president of marketing, Luminent Inc. "Intel helped facilitate our development process by offering evaluation boards and design kits, combined with local applications support."

Now 18 months later, this product is ready for primetime..

Maybe KG got fed up with lack of Sumitomo support at ExceLight. Being the COO of a corporate subsidiary is not the same as of a standalone company so I am not necessarily surprised at his willingness to become VP of Sales at Luminent. He must believe that the opportunity at Luminent is greater with this product than it was at ExceLight.. Of course 4 months ago, KG was saying that Excelight's product was superior to those of its competitors. That's the beauty of being in sales!!

By the way, the 10 gbps TOSA/ROSA (almost as fast as a testarossa) is prominently headlined on Luminent’s website as now available.. a 10GE DWDM transponder with 80 km range and providing in field/in service upgrade of existing CWDM/DWDM networks must be due out any day.
