Globe says Mitel, Nortel like the sound of VoIP

2004-05-13 07:42 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, May 13, edition that voice-over Internet protocol has helped many in the telecom sector stage a comeback. The Globe's Simon Tuck writes that voice-over Internet protocol, a hot telecom prospect for almost a decade, is now becoming an established star that threatens to shake up its industry by converging voice and data networks. "The way people are going to communicate is going to be very different," said Mitel Networks chief operating officer Paul Butcher. "I think the market hurdles have fundamentally gone away." For the telecommunications equipment industry, VoIP is creating new hope -- and revenue. Mitel and Nortel Networks are considered among the top tier of players supplying equipment for VoIP, says The Globe. Mitel says more than half of its sales in the most recent quarter came from its VoIP products. During the same period a year earlier VoIP products accounted for less than 10 per cent of sales. Nortel would not provide details about the importance of the blossoming market, other than to say it is one of the company's top areas for research and development.
