Get Ready for the Big RFID Market

Crista Souza is a senior editor for Electronics Supply & Manufacturing (ESM), a monthly print magazine published by CMP Media. CMP Media also publishes Silicon Strategies.

By some measures radio frequency identification (RFID) is not quite ready for prime time.

Even early adopters admit that they still have to work out glitches in the technology, which is one reason why it had existed in relative obscurity for decades. But when WalMart Stores Inc. last year threw its considerable weight behind RFID, alongside the likes of Albertsons, Target and the U.S. Department of Defense, a wave of support for the technology began to build that has very real implications for the electronics industry.

Tier-one OEMs, electronics manufacturing services (EMS) providers and chip suppliers have begun experimenting internally with RFID, not just to comply with customer mandates, but also to find ways to reap benefits within their own enterprises. Results to date are still considered proprietary, but the activity shows that large companies are taking seriously RFID's latent operational rewards, despite its high cost.

Industry sources say it's likely that within a few years RFID will affect your value chain, even if your company hasn't adopted it by then.
