Some of the fuss about this incident is pretty far fetched. The Iraqi authorities - whether Iraqi or US is hardly relevant - detained him. They investigated, on the basis of legitimate suspicion. Finding no reason to detain him further, they let him go. They advised him to leave, but they had no brief or responsibility to force him to leave. He ignored the advice and paid the price.

A person who climbs into a zoo pen and sticks his head in an alligator's mouth, and gets his head bitten off, was killed not by the zookeeper or the alligator, but by his own stupidity. There are parts of the world where stupidity is a terminal condition, and some people just have to find this out the hard way.
