At least they have someone watching gov't spending now. It was quite an eye opener for Canadians to find out that when Martin was Finance Minister he was only responsible for revenue collection, not watching spending. That is so unlike the household spending environment of most Canadian voters I'm sure they feel disenfranchised at this point.
Regarding US relations, Chretien hurt Canada by at least not visiting Bush right after 911. Canada has the same problem as the US, though, in terms of an aging society that finds it easier to foster immigration over increasing the birthrate to support social security. The difference I see is that in Canada, Chretien only let immigrants into the ridings where his vote was low, to support his reelection. I wonder if that happens in the US?
