BUSH BY THE NUMBERS:
#04: The Four Alls. As you will recall, the Constitutional Convention was held in Philadelphia in 1787. A little known fact is that the rump convention was being held at a tavern about three blocks from the site of the official Convention by the yeoman farmers and tradesmen who were precluded from attending the rich man's convention. The tavern was called "The Four Alls". The signboard at the entrance was a series of images with captions. The First All was "The King", the caption read, "I rule all!". The second image was the Archbishop, the caption read, "I pray for all!". The Third All was the General, who proclaimed, "I fight for all!" And the Fourth All was you and me, captioned howling, "Damn! I pay for all!" |
