Barely 48 later & it's
nearly forgotten by the few that bothered to cover it sans
outrage.

This scenario seems typical to me. Some people are outraged and want their outrage affirmed. Most people aren't outraged and that's the way the mainstream media cover it. Which increases the outrage of the outraged.

<<Shamefully, we now learn that Saddam's torture chambers
reopened under new management: U.S. management." >>

IMO, Kennedy shouldn't have said what he did. The way he said it was too hot. His point was well taken but he exaggerated for effect and that was poor judgment on his part given the venue. Spoken at a political rally it would be OK.

As for his point being well taken, what he said is a normal shame reaction, I think--"here we are doing just what we were trying to overcome." Whether shame was what he was expressing or whether he was consciously politicizing we can't be sure. The more moderate and accurate statement would have been something that acknowledged that the US management was torture-lite. But that wouldn't have been as rhetorically effective so he went with an exaggerated statement. Shame on him.

So, for those already outraged over anti-war rhetoric, this was further outrage. For the rest of us, it was understandable but inappropriate overstatement. The way to report it is either to stick to the main story and spare everyone the pain of the overstatement by leaving that awkward part out or to report it in the context of the strong reaction to it.
