<<No matter what happens in the war with Iraq, no matter what the evildoers do, the Times wants to bring it back to high-level American misconduct - misconduct so severe that it supposedly calls the entire mission in Iraq into question. To blame the United States for Berg's beheading might be acceptable for Berg's own grief-deranged kin. But it is not acceptable for The New York Times or anyone else.>>

This is the kind of thinking that blows my mind. When incidents like this happen, the family is always interviewed and their comments are given respectful treatment. I find it absurd that having done so in a case where the family is critical of the President is somehow biased. Having seen the complaints, I read the story twice. It seemed typical of grieving-family coverage to me.

Berg's father's thinking on this is out of line, as I pointed out yesterday. I agree with Podhoretz that the Times espousing it would be out of line, too. But their reporting of it does not constitute an endorsement. The media reported that Elton John found racism in the AI voting. That doesn't mean that they endorse his conclusion.
