Italians would not put up with taht sort of nonsense.
While there are a great many lawyers here--nearly as many as there are architects--most of them don't make very much money. Tort law is in its infancy. And given that Your Lawsuit probably won't come to court for at least ten years, there's not a whole lotta incentive... In all criminal cases, the right to two appeals is automatic. I don't know how it works for civil cases, but you're no doubt beginning to get the idea.
Food. No. Italians absolutely will not eat beef well-done. Hey, we live on the edge!!! Gotta say this, though: as far as I know, we don't have any problem with salmonella in eggs or undercooked chicken (okay, practically NO ONE eats undercooked chicken willingly, but duck is normally served bloody). We also don't have a problem with trichinosis: it's perfectly okay to eat your pork chops rare (much, much better!!). The pork thing was instilled in me from birth: the first time I saw an Italian casually eat a strip of raw bacon I nearly gagged.
If it can be done here, why not in the States? Rigorous inspection, destruction of diseased animals. (One novit…: can't buy brain or sweetbreads, as of a month ago; the mad cow disease risk was adjudged too great, though there haven't been any cases in Italy. People are really pissed off.)
And a question: why the hell not just FREEZE the burger before serving it rare? All this is so STUPID.
