Carter cannot be blamed for what happened to him. Though he may have been "too nice" to be president, he got hit hard by several events out of his control. Starting with the enormous Vietnam War debt which drove up inflation, next the awful Arab oil boycott and Iran hostage situation, both of which had their roots in previous years. Finally, the failed hostage rescue mission. All in all, none of these were his fault but he had to bear responsibility anyway. The bucks stops at the president's desk, so Carter was no more.

BTW: Did Carter step down and refuse to run again? I can't remember. If so, he did the same as Johnson and Nixon did, and the same as Bush should do. Bow out with dignity and hand off to well-respected moderate leadership. Otherwise, Bush may go down to a landslide defeat. Of course I would love to see that, but Bushies wouldn't.
