You're right, it was not about oil. That's very obvious to anyone who has bothered to look at the realities of the Iraqi oil industry. By the time that industry achieves any meaningful level of production - which will take many years and many billions of dollars - it will be far outside of our control.

The war was about power, and an American administration's desire and political need to make a large, public display of force. In many ways a legitimate goal, but I'm not convinced that head-butting the tar baby was the best way of achieving it.

Getting out of there intact, even close to intact, is going to be a whole hell of a lot harder than getting in there was.
