Mazda to add 8 models in Chinese market

TOKYO - Mazda Motor Corp plans to introduce eight more models in the Chinese market over the next three to four years and to raise sales there to 300,000 units by 2010, company president Hisakazu Imaki said at a press conference here on Thursday.

Imaki said the company will "build new production sites and expand the organization" in establishing a new local factory and directly owned dealerships. The firm is now discussing details with local partners.

Mazda currently outsources manufacturing of three models to the China FAW Group Corp, including the Mazda 6 sedan. Last year's total sales were 80,000 units, making Mazda second to Honda among Japanese car makers in China.

Imaki also announced plans to increase by 10 percent production of the Axela, a popular sedan sold in Europe, the US and Japan.

Mazda's main Hofu factory is operating at full capacity, producing 300,000 vehicles a year. The company will use the second plant at that Yamaguchi prefecture site to respond to shortages, according to Imaki.
