Another job-creation opportunity slips out of Tucson
May 11, 2004

The local economic development community as a whole needs to know more about the businesses that already call Tucson home.

Since no economic development official knew much about a company called Ionatron, no economic development official could take proactive steps to help retain this defense contractor, which opened in 2001.

Now, the company has a new, $9 million contract and announced last week that it is moving to Mississippi into a 600,000-square-foot building with the expectation of hiring up to 300 employees by the end of 2005.

These are exactly the types of existing companies that Tucson should pay attention to as part of regional economic development efforts.

Sure, Mississippi may have provided strong competition in any retention effort, but at this point, we do not know if Tucson had a facility that would have worked just as well. That’s a shame—a big shame.

Tucson is crying for new job opportunities. Existing business development here could have potentially led to at least 300 new jobs. But now it’s a lost opportunity.
