lorne, you did not state what the Republican party of today is proposing instead of taking it away.

Why doesn't Bush restore the "no tax on SS"? Simple to see. The rich do not pay much into the SS. Hence this would not be a benefit to the rich. Instead it would primarily benefit the middle class if Bush did that.

Here is a very interesting excerpt from an Indian newspaper editorial that I picked up. The editorial was about the shocking results of the recetly concluded Indian elections. We could have assumed that with the booming of insourcing or US businesses into India, the govt. would have been reelected. But the results proved quite the opposite. And I state this because some of it is going to be very relevant to our elections in November.

In India, political equity arrived long before any supposed social equity. This has required the masses to trust the country's leadership to do the right thing. That they do not is obvious for all to see.

India is home to "nearly a third of the world's software engineers and a quarter of the world's undernourished".

While this situation presents a paradox, it is not an enigma. India's development is one born of policies that have been skewed in favour of the rich and their aspirations since the country's independence.
