"It's all about oil" is a pejorative with me. If it was, we wouldn't be paying $41 for oil now. I see what we have done since 911 as "draining the swamp."

Well, we "wouldn't be paying $41 for oil now" if all had gone as the fantasy going in would have had it. If there really were cheering Iraqis on every corner and if Shock and Awe had really subdued whatever opposition there was. If the Republican Guard had fought the war we wanted to fight and stood in the desert waiting to be bombed and gunned down into oblivion.

But it didn't play out the way it supposed to. And Mr. Proud to be a C-student Bush, Mr. Wonderful Defense Secretary Rumsfeld and friends didn't make alternate plans in case they happened to be wrong, as any number of people said they would be prior to the war. Including people who vote Republican.

I know "It's all about oil" simplifies matters considerably. True enough. But the truth also is that if the oil wasn't there, we wouldn't be there. No matter how bad Saddam was. Let's not pretend that simple minded slogans only emanate from the left. Quite a few from the right as well.
