One could argue that Cubans are in better shape than a lot of similar Caribbean nations. Try comparing Cuba to a fine Capitalist "democratic" nation like Haiti for instance. Ask any Jamaican in Jamaica and he/she'll jump at any opportunity to emmigrate from there. Cuba has the best educational/medical facilities in the area. It has the highest litracy rate in the Western world. There are many positives about that country that the WH, State Dept. and the Pentagon are no doubt considering destroying so that their rich buddies can set up Casinos there. I guess the reason it hasn't already been done is that Cuba has no significant amount of oil. God help them if they strike oil there.
