Bonus points if you can tell me the inevitable long-term fate of nations that have pursued such aggressive policies.

But the "slogans about democracy," although convenient and likely contrived to cover other motives, are extremely important. They're the lies that were necessary to keep the American public on board. At least, as a nation, a majority of us have enough idealism so that we need to be lied to before we'll support imperialism.
