Asian warrior have practiced cruelty to scare enemies since time immemorial. They are also in that region, hostage prone, as they know that is scary too. Probably they look upon Abu-Garib and Guantanamo as hostage taking too. Hard to really argue that. Most Asian and middle eastern countries are not signatory to the Geneva convention. Changing their habits of prisoner mistreatment or their tendency to take hostages will be difficult.

At any rate, we are treating prisoners in our jails -- both POW and domestic jails - below the standards that POW's were kept in Nazi Germany. Nothing related by allied POW's personally to myself or in print about German WWII prisons is as bad as the treatment of prisoners in Canadian and US civilian prisons, and the treatment of Afghani and Iraqi prisoners so far in military jails. By and large, with the exception of diet, even the Jews were generally treated with more respect than prisoners are in our jails. Prisoners in our jails are handcuffed, and not given blankets or pillows. They are forced to sleep on steel slabs and go to the toilet under the eye of a camera. WWII POW's were never handcuffed by the Nazis and had pillows, blankets and mattresses. With the exception of spies and saboteurs, the POWs in Germany were never tortured or degraded. I know for a fact that US troops routinely beat and tortured NAZI prisoners. The Germans would give up en masse to the Canadians in order to avoid being taken prisoner by US troops. This comes directly from Canadian 8th army officers who witnessed this maltreatment at the hands of GI's, and from the testimony of captured German officers and enlisted men to these same 8th army officers.
