I think Johnson was honestly ashamed of the number of Americans he sent to death in Vietnam. Like Bush today, he'd been following the advice of a bunch of experts that kept assuring him "the tide would turn" and all he had to do was "stay the course". No American could conceive of losing a war to a tiny country like Vietnam. Our massive hubris kept us there until 58,000 Americans had died, and millions of Vietnamese. If we left, the Communists would take over the world. Deja Vu?
