fuzzy-

torturers have to disregard the fact that
their victims are human beings, with doubts
and longings, hankerings, fears and hesitations
no different from their own. and in order to
work themselves up into the morbid state
necessary to inflict the torture they would,
i have to assume, be able to dehumanize their
victims - think of them as cockroaches, rats,
infidels, terrorists - anything but what they
are - people. that would be difficult to do.
try and imagine yourself ignoring screams and
pleas for mercy.

in my opinion the american guards lost as much
dignity as the unfortunate souls they tortured
and humiliated.

the most disturbing element of this sordid affair
is that the gi's were able to do it - ordinary
sons and daughters - were able to put themselves in
that place where they could inflict pain and
humiliation on men and women and do so with smiles
on their faces.

the second most disturbing element is that the
american public is not outraged.
