Well, I have to hand it to you, UW. I'm content to limit my aircraft experience to an even number of takeoffs and landings. If it gets a little bumpy, I have to pray my barf bag isn't too far away.

I've carried 112 pounds on my back before, but only when packing elk out. My gawd! I could hardly get on my feet and once on my feet I dared not sit down again. I can't even imagine what it must be like to jump out of a plane without that much gear on, let alone with it. My sister did, but gave it up after three jumps and three injuries.

You've read Ambrose's "Band of Brothers?" If not, you're in for a treat. I know you'll understand it from first hand experience.

I have nothing but respect for warriors like yourself. I'm not ashamed to admit that I don't have what it takes. Any Geronimo who gets a little cocky damn well deserves it, if you ask me.

Have you ever toured a smoke jumper base? They don't carry much gear beyond that required to get them out of trees, and all their gear is dropped to them separately. Quite a few women have become jumpers, and by all accounts do well. But then, forest fires don't shoot back. And they don't have to carry 112 pounds of gear and ammo.
