DIAL C FOR COMICS: TELECOM'S IDT BUILDS A GRAPHICS EMPIRE

By BEN SILVERMAN

May 18, 2004 -- IS an oft-ignored telecom company from Newark poised to be the next global entertainment giant?

IDT Corp., best known for its calling cards and its back-end telecom services, has quietly assembled an impressive portfolio of media assets under its IDT Entertainment unit.

Last week, the company acquired Manga Entertainment, one of the largest Japanese animation houses; the company also cut a deal with animator Todd McFarlane to bring the Emmy -winning "Spawn" series back to life. The recent wins follow deals with Stan Lee, the godfather of American comics, and the acquisition of the rights to Archie Comics characters.

IDT Entertainment is already producing more minutes of animation than any other studio in the world, according to Stephen Brown, IDT Corp.'s chief financial officer and chairman of IDT Entertainment. "Pixar is a fine company, but we're doing more animation then they are right now," he said.

After the Manga deal, IDT Entertainment is on track for $170 million in revenues for the fiscal year and is expected to churn out $18 million in net income, Brown told The Post.

But IDT doesn't get much attention on Wall Street - despite the fact that it reported $1.8 billion in revenue last year and is on track to surpass $2 billion this year.
