So, the answer to getting everyone on one page is for the terrorists to scare the shit out of us once again, for us to be damaged once again.
How about, as an alternative, the President reach out to those folks, come up with an approach that includes the creativity and buy-in from a broader spectrum? What a concept!
Makes no sense to me to prefer an attack to showing some flexibility and collegiality.
That's why I deliberately used the word "unfortunately" as the first word in my post, Karen. I don't like it any more than you do.
But I am a realist. And I know that we are a deeply divided country at the moment. There are a substantial number of "Bush haters" who cannot stomach him, who will not respond to any entreaties because he is "dumb" [yeah, right], he has few impromptu speaking skills, is not too articulate, and a host of other reasons that don't make much sense. This large group wouldn't piss on Bush if he were on fire.
How can he reach out under these circumstances?
We have forgotten how important this threat is, and it is only natural since human beings generally respond only to what is in their face at the moment. Americans, especially, seem to have the attention span of a flea afflicted by ADD. If only our enemies were so unfocused.
That's why I think that unfortunately it will take another mass event before we are brought together as a nation to recognize once again how serious the threat really is. |
