Actually, "this new slot architecture is good in that it improves system performance" is pure fiction. They are just duplicating the Pentium Pro dual bus architecture on a PCBoard (but at 1/2 the speed) because they couldn't make the 512KB chip for the L2 cavity cache in acceptable yield (admitted privately by an Intel architect and readily verified by checkiing the current prices of the 256 and 512KB P6-200s).
Since they need a high-end PPro for Sequent-type servers (the curent P II is limited to dual processors), they just announced an interim solution, a PPro with a 1024KB cache--even though they can't make 512s cost-effectively--go figure :-)
