Dave,

Your machine sounds like mine used to. Now, I run W98SE 16 hours a day with no problems but I had to do some disciplined housekeeping and add another fan to make it stable.

You don't need more software or a different OS. What maintenance have you done? When you popped up the Task Manager how many things are running in the background? When you ran MSCONFIG and checked the startup folder how many things there can you select not to run at start up and how many of them can you do without and delete?

How rigorously have you cleaned the Registry? Have you booted to DOS and then run SCANREG/FIX and then SCANREG/RESTORE? Do Scandisk and Defrag work OK? Have you checked and re-seated cables to peripherals?

When you use the Resource Meter applet does it show that your resources tend to become diminished? Maybe too many background programs or some program with a memory hole is the problem.

Have you removed and cleaned the gold "fingers" on your memory sticks and then made sure they were securely re-installed? You can "scrub" these fingers with a pencil eraser to get them clean. Have you re-installed the drivers for your monitor?

Well, I could go on. As a last resort stick some more pins into the heart of your Bill Gates voodoo doll <g>.

Let us know if any of this helps.

Dick
