It depends on what their production budget was... if their budget was only $500K, then they have some nice profits already... but if the budget was $1 million, then they still have a bit more to go before they break even... you have to earn three times the budget in order to break even... the distributor gets the top 1/3rd, then the theaters get the second 1/3rd, then the studio keeps the bottom 1/3rd... so, if the budget came to one million dollars, then they have to earn 3 million at the box office before they can break even... but, this picture still hasn't gone the home video and DVD markets... home video and DVD's typically triple the theatrical box office receipts... so, if they've already generated $2.5 million to date, then they can probably look forward to another $7 million in those other markets... this is very good for a documentary... if they can gross $10 million worldwide, then they could also very likely lease the cable television rights and take in another $3.5 million, that's what cable television will pay for a six month lease for the broadcast rights for a film, generally speaking...
