..."We look at this like we're planting a tree," said Brian McMahon, the president of Santa Fe, N.M.-based Thornburg Investment Management and team leader of the fund. "The absolute level of dividend has grown over time at about 5 percent a year. We're trying to participate in that kind of dividend growth. If we do have a growing revenue stream, there should be some capital appreciation as a byproduct."

Currently, the fund holds about $300 million in assets with about 84 percent of that money in stocks and the rest in bonds. When picking stocks, the team looks past companies that "hoard retained earnings" -- McMahon mentioned Microsoft (MSFT: news, chart, profile) as a classic example -- to companies with both the ability and willingness to pay attractive and growing dividends...

BTW, HPQ's earnings add additional confirmation that IT spending is indeed back in a healthy growth phase...
