Teri, you have highlighted a good comparison. The type of neglect and shunning the Semi Equipment sector went thru last year can be paralled to the love hate relationship networking companies are seeing this year. But the underlying fundamental strength of their business needs to be understood. Stocks reflect the strength of a companys business. For the Semi Equip companies (SE) they are the basic suppliers to all Semi companies. The SE dont care whether the company they sell to makes DRAMS, Logic Chips, PLD's or Microprocessors. They just sell the basic building technology. So when that need to build and add capacity slows the growth of the SE sector just dies (a la 96) but when it comes back for the next phase, does it come back !!
The networkers are going through that lull period themselves of dimished need for capacity for the time being. The IT departments of Corporations and the Phone companies (who will be the major ISPs) are still evaluating future needs and capacities. But when they come up with their budgets and requirements then watch the fireworks. And the time will come as we look around ourselves and compare the internet commerce taking place since 2 years ago. Now add things like Videoconferncing, Voice over the Internet etc... and these services will not have a flat rate like AOL but will be metered. Then watch these fund managers fall all over themselves buying these stocks at horrendous levels. I will gladly give it them but not unless they pay a ridiculous price for it. And from todays action of the SE stocks I dont think thats impossible because hey, it aint their money in the first place. Jeez, AMAT 25 -> 108 , KLAC 18 -> 76, LRCX 22 -> 66,
NVLS 35 -> 119, ASMLF 20 -> 99 and I thought the California lottery was great.
