I don't think there are any useful generalizations here.

Some small companies have done well with me-too technology under the umbrella of capacity constraints at the dominant supplier. These companies will suffer and possibly die. Meanwhile, some larger suppliers have neglected research in smaller segments (or simply been leapfrogged) where small companies are providing a better product -- these small companies have a chance at becoming the dominant supllier in that niche (or become buyout candidates).

I have invested in both, selectively.
