You don't understand the American mindset. I know it's hard to believe Americans could support this sort of nonsense. Most of the world understands the dirty work we're doing. But, most Americans are brainwashed into thinking that the U.S. is always doing good in the world. Little events like this fly in the face of that logic, but most people either aren't aware of them or rationalize them some way, like they must have been firing in self-defense. Patriotism is a very strong force.

A rational foreign policy would be one that removes foreign oil from the the American economy altogether, not one that is agressive and attacks countries for oil. We're certainly at the point technologically where it can be done, we can reduce our oil dependence tremendously with efficiency gains and new technologies. Also, the U.S. could put a lot pressure on Isreal to settle their dispute with the Palestinians, like witholding money. But, such moves would kill the two biggest money making industries in the world, oil and arms dealing, so don't expect a rational foreign policy out of Washington any time soon. As much as we cringe at these daily reports of carnage from Iraq, the military industrial complex loves them, it means more money, more profits, more of everything that keeps them in existence.

A sad but true assessment of the world in the early 21st Century.
