The reason AMAT went with ASML relates to ASML strength of simplicity and low cost. The ASML DUV stepper is more suited of experiments. The Micrascan has great capability in manufacturing, but it comes at a cost, in terms of dollars and expertise. The Micrascan so most suited for the highest end manufacturing of products with high price tags (ie Intel microprocessors) or the development of fully functional advanced memory chips. The Micrascan is not good for doing demos and unit operation experiments. AMAT would not want to hire the experienced people to run/maintain a Micrascan. I also believe AMAT is not interested in ASML step-and-scan system (of the near future) for the same reason. This is an apples to oranges comparison.
