the first one to be sentenced over Abu Ghraib, received the maximum penalty, according to the prosecutors, because he violated, not only US law, but the Geneva Conventions, as well as common human decency

Whoa. How do we know that all the prisoners of Abu Ghraib fell under the Geneva Conventions? I find it curious that we have had zero discussion of their identity. The Geneva Conventions spell out protections for a) uniformed soldiers, b) civilians. They also say that armies who catch spies or saboteurs in civilian dress are entitled to shoot them or detain them indefinitely, as military necessity requires. They do not get the protections of the Third and Fourth Geneva conventions.
