Look at the emphasis here. The Guardian and NYT are both quite liberal. The Guardian seems to have collected enough independent eyewitness accounts to reach a conclusion

A simpler explanation is that the Guardian choses to believe Iraqi reports over American reports in any disputed case. They might have told us whether it is a normal feature of Iraqi weddings to be shooting off lots of guns at 2:45 AM.
