Derek, here's the first Usenet post. It's spreading like wildfire...
Subject: Intel kicks Microsoft out of its bed to invite in Sun From: jim@jimbrooks.NOJUNKMAIL.org (Jim Brooks) Date: 1997/07/24 Message-Id: <5r67tn$oc8$2@nntp2.ba.best.com> Newsgroups: comp.lang.java.advocacy,comp.lang.java.programmer,comp.lang.java.machine,comp.sys.intel,comp.sys.mac.advocacy,comp.sys.mac.misc,comp.os.ms-windows.misc,comp.os.linux.misc,comp.os.os2advocacy [More Headers]
Intel Corporation has been performing strongly, earning huge profits from its latest overpriced processors by the sales of new PCs. However, two factors are causing a dark cloud to form over Santa Clara.
One factor is the declining ability of Microsoft's software to signifcantly slow down the Pentiums from a few years ago, which would make users feel that their Pentium system is becoming obsolete. Unfortunately for Intel, gradually fewer users are upgrading their hardware. This wasn't the case years ago: Microsoft could easily demonstrate that the 80286 was incapable and the 80386 was hardly adequate in terms of speed.
The second factor reinforces the first factor: Intel's latest technologies (processors, MMX, PCI bus, new motherboard designs) have grossly excessive performance for the typical user, which also contributes to lengthening the hardware upgrade cycle.
But while Intel frets, Sun comes riding in like Intel's white knight. Sun has the perfect solution for Intel's dilemma: the Java Virtual Machine. Intel's hope is that tomorrow's software will increasingly be written in Java, causing the Pentiums sold a few years ago to be bottle-necked by the appallingly sloth-like Java Virtual Machine. With user's then noticing that their Pentium effectively runs at 10% of its original speed while being bogged down by a Java interpreter, Intel's profits will surge yet again.
