[Fujitsu, Orckit to Jointly Develop ADSL Modems ]

Fujitsu Microelectronics of Britain has announced the signing of a co-operation agreement with Israel's Orckit for developing the next generation of modem chips for ADSL II communications technology.

The purpose of the co-operation between the two companies is to develop a new chip, combining digital and analog technologies that will enable compact digital modems to be designed. It will support DMT-type modulation for transmission at a rate of 8 Megabits per second.

ADSL is a fast, digital asymmetric transmission technology. This means that the subscriber's rate of receiving data from the network is very high, whereas its rate of sending data is much lower. It is based on the assumption that most Internet users receive much more information from the net than they send to it.

This enables telephone companies to send wide-band telecommunications services (data and voice) using the existing copper wire infrastructure.
